Unique Approach
From his speech The Communicating Animal he describes his
experience on why learning techniques alone are not enough:
"After that paralyzing experience (1986 thesis presentation) I spent
many months learning techniques of public speaking and went
through a struggle of will each time I stood up to speak. I knew
how to speak, what to say, and my listeners even congratulated me
on my speeches, but inside I fought a battle just to stand up to
make every presentation..."
"I became an excellent puppet master of techniques, but even so I
felt like something was missing. Speaking should not feel this
stressful..."
"Although I mastered techniques, I discovered that this battle
continued on within me because of a lack in trust in my abilities of
expression, fear that is still trying to protect me from public failure
and humiliation, and deeply held habits that restricted my ability to
speak out openly. Each word I spoke was pushed through turmoil
within me. Once I let go of these protective habits of thought and
movement, the turmoil vanished and I began connecting with the
people in my audience."
Recognizing that learning techniques are not enough, his current
seminars include changing self-concepts around the abilities of
public expression and releasing protective habits to allow genuine
interaction with an audience, discussion group, or class.
